When the Texas summer hits full swing, it’s easy to forget that sunshine can come with some hidden dangers—especially when you’ve got a furry friend with a built-in fur coat.
But don’t worry, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy quality time with your dog this season, all while staying cool and making memories.
Here are five fun, dog-friendly activities (plus one bonus idea!) that you and your dog will both love.
1. Sunrise Strolls in the Shade
Beat the heat with an early morning walk when the sun is still low, and the air is cooler. If you’re looking for a change of scenery, you can also head to a local park with plenty of shade trees.
Top picks:
Northshore Park in The Woodlands — With its mature trees and easy paths, Northshore Park offers a relaxing space to stroll while your dog sniffs to their heart’s content.
Carl Barton Jr. Park in Conroe — This local gem features shaded trails and open green space, perfect for an early morning walk.

2. Make a Splash with Swimming or Dock Diving
Some dogs are born to swim—and for others, just getting their paws wet is enough fun. Whether you’re looking for serious dock diving practice or a casual paddle session, there are options nearby that keep dogs cool and entertained.
Start local: Many of our neighborhoods in The Woodlands, Spring, and Conroe have ponds or small lakes where dogs can safely wade or splash along the shore.
Look for shaded community green spaces with water access—just make sure it’s allowed and clean before letting your pup dive in.
Try this: Some local facilities offer private dog pools with warm water and even dock diving options. These temperature-controlled environments are designed with dogs in mind and offer a safe, fun way to help them burn energy and stay cool—without the risks of extreme summer heat. Be sure to check reviews and policies before booking a session.
One local favorite is Rummy’s Beach Club in Spring, TX, which offers private swim sessions and dock diving opportunities. My own dogs were never much for swimming, but based on the rave reviews and loyal following, this spot is clearly a hit with many local pups and their people!
3. Stay Cool with Indoor Training Games
When it’s too hot to venture outside, bring the fun indoors.
Short training games like hide and seek, name recognition, or trick training keep your dog mentally sharp and happy.
These activities are especially helpful in combating boredom during long stretches indoors, helping to reduce unwanted behaviors and keeping your dog emotionally satisfied.
It’s also a great way to reinforce good behavior—and sneak in some extra treats. Need ideas? Try using a snuffle mat, puzzle toy, or even hiding kibble around the house for a mini treasure hunt!
A couple of popular options include:
Outward Hound Brick Puzzle Game: This highly rated puzzle offers multiple compartments and difficulty levels to keep your dog engaged and mentally stimulated.
Snuffle mats are great for encouraging your dog’s natural foraging instincts, providing mental stimulation and a rewarding challenge that keeps boredom at bay. Amazon has several designs to choose from or you could make one yourself.

4. Popsicle DIY Day
Cool treats aren’t just for humans! A frozen snack can be a fun surprise that helps your dog beat the heat. The best part? You can make them at home in just a few minutes.
Easy Peanut Butter & Banana Frozen Treats
- 1 ripe banana
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (or unsweetened coconut yogurt if your dog is lactose intolerant)
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter (no xylitol) Mash it all together, spoon into silicone molds or ice cube trays, and freeze for a few hours.
Your dog will love the taste—and you’ll love how easy it was.
Chicken or Bone Broth Pupsicles
- 1 cup low-sodium chicken or bone broth (make sure it’s onion- and garlic-free)
- A few small dog treats or pieces of cooked chicken Pour the broth into ice cube trays or silicone molds and drop in the treats. Freeze for a few hours and serve as a hydrating and savory summer snack.

5. Movie Day at Home (aka: Air Conditioning + Cuddles)
Some summer days are just made for staying inside. Why not plan a themed movie day with your pup? Curl up on the couch, grab a blanket, and binge your favorite dog-themed flicks (Homeward Bound, Lady and the Tramp, The Secret Life of Pets—the classics!).
Or, stick with heartwarming favorites from this list of Disney dog movies—my husband and I are currently watching Bolt for the fifth time and still love it!.
Add some popcorn for you and a treat-filled Kong for your pup, and you’ve got a perfect indoor bonding activity.

Bonus: A Studio Session!
If you’ve been meaning to professionally capture just how adorable your dog is (or how much they mean to your family), summer is the perfect time to make it happen.
Think of a studio session as your dog’s VIP moment—no sunburns, no stress, just timeless memories without the sweat, bugs, or muddy paw prints.
Whether your pup is a total ham for the camera or needs a little extra encouragement, I’ll guide the session to match their personality.
